Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k G1 - disassembly and repair
I was bored and found a broken Ursa Mini Pro 4.6k on the internet for super cheap. Decided to get it and take it apart, see how it's built and what is wrong with it. Luckily I found the problem and was able to fix it!
Sorry for the long video, figured I'd upload it anyways for everyone to see. You can just skip through it :)
2 month update
###########
so it's been 2 months since I made this video until I decided to waste youtube server space and upload it. Since then the Ursa really has grown on me and I'm definitely going to keep it. Owning a professional camera like that was always a dream of mine but I could never afford one or justify the cost to just have fun with it. Also i'm happy that...

that's what I was up to during the lockdown. I thought I would learn to play guitar as I always loved guitars. Bought one from ebay for cheap in terrible condition and fixed it up myself. Had to level some frets. New nut, new tuners, new pickups. Yay for youtube tutorials. Then, to learn to play it properly. Took me a year to learn, I think I'm doing quite well for such a short time. Vacuum tube makes cool colours on 4kV

And it just did not want to die! Some old vacuum tube where I can't read the model number... I think it's a rectifier tube. I put my resonant MOT 4kV supply on it, a few times! The tube got really really hot but it just did not want to blow up or melt. Oh well, it still made cool colours, especially the green before it just stopped doing anything. Maybe lost vacuum? Sodium gas discharge lamp on high voltage MOT
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.10 лет назад
This little gas discharge lamp was inside a larger light bulb found in street lights here in Europe. They need a starting voltage to get the arc going and then pulls some amps I guess. So I was wondering what will happen on 4kV and one amp. Not enough to pop it, but it did change colour as it got too hot yay
Arcs with resonant MOT - yay high voltage
Просмотров 21710 лет назад
Just a follow up from my last video, some arcs with my 3 microwave oven transformer which are in a resonance with a series capacitor. After all that, the MOTs were just slightly warm, since the third MOT was a ballast. The watt meter showed a peak of 2.3kW. I did wear safety googles for this one because of sparks and potentially exploding caps. And a fire extinguisher was there too, just to be ...
Resonant MOT vs non resonant MOT
Просмотров 20 тыс.10 лет назад
I came across the channel from Radio Trefoil (link below) who used a microwave oven transformer in resonance with a capacitor. It makes things more efficient, so more sparks with the MOTs not getting as hot. Made sense to me, so I tried it and here is the result! ruclips.net/user/RadioTrefoil Awesome!

I found 3 of those microwave transformers in the dump, lets see what cool stuff I can come up with^^ but for the first test I connected them in series to see what happens. Was amazed how much power they have... and how hot they get. I need ballast and resonant caps! woohooo

      the cooling stack was pressing against the back of the sensor, which was only held by its own solder joints. Those would crack after a while.

    Thank you so much for creating this video and congratulations on an awesome camera for dirt cheap! I have a functional 4.6K G2 and it's just awesome to see what the internals look like and what the pain points might be. There's just one little issue with it. I bought the camera used a couple of months ago and didn't notice that one of the EF-mount screw hole threads were stripped by the previous owner. I've contacted BM support and they told me there's no way of rethreading the hole and they would have to replace the entire sensor assembly - cost of the sensor assembly itself is 2100€. The cost of labour and shipping were 200€ in total. I paid about 2000€ for the whole body when I bought it so it makes no sense to go the official route. The EF mount works fine even with three screws. The stripped thread is at the bottom left position and the mount is very solid without it. My father is a master craftsman and we already looked into rethreading the hole with a slightly wider screw. We have the equipment and materials. Do you think this would work? I would assume there are no electronics right next to the screw holes?

    Does anyone know if the sensor uses unleaded or leaded solder? I'd rather not use the wrong spec and compromise the joints further.

    • @chDiago
      @chDiago 5 месяцев назад

      Pretty much any consumer electronics nowdays uses unleaded solder as lead is toxic and legal reasons and stuff. Anything still containing lead has to be labeled with the Pb sign, like certain batteries or lights and would need to be recycled which is expensive. I used leaded solder for the repair as it's just so much easier to work with, flows better and sticks to things better. It has better sheer strength too, that's why everyone used leaded before it was deemed too toxic to dump into landfills.

    • @SeoN8
      @SeoN8 5 месяцев назад

      @@chDiago Did you find the super thin solder was a help in this repair? Would a thicker diameter be a hindrance? I've got 0.5mm unleaded solder and 0.8mm leaded solder available that I'm hoping will be sufficient.

    Hey bro, I used my ursa in the rain and thought a bag would be enough to protect it. The next day I started seeing horizontal bands (like 1 pixel high) and they'd show up as a thin orange line with focus assist. The camera worked for a few months after, once it got up to operating temp the horizontal lines went a way. Then one day it finally bit the dust and is just a black screen like yours now. Any idea if this is worth attempting to fix? I know water damage can be bad but this was a weird one because it had to have been just a few droplets that got in the wrong place. I'll go in and solder even haha. Took such good care of the camera it would be a shame to let it die this way so I'll try whatever it takes.

    This is a fantastic video and actually really interesting to watch! I've recently purchased a second hand Ursa Mini Pro G2 which very occasionally boots up with pink smears across the image. The menu icons are still there (so I'm assuming it's a similar sensor issue) and turning it off and on again seems to fix it, but it concerns me as I feel it may get worse with time. Bit of a long shot, but is there any chance you'd consider taking it on as a paid repair job? I don't know where you're based but your technical knowledge and skills are fantastic, having seen your own repair. Apologies leaving this as a public comment, I couldn't find any other way of getting in touch! All the best Elliot

      @chDiago 11 месяцев назад

      Hi, thanks a lot for your comment! I'm based in Germany so might be difficult, but I would not mind having a look. I have heard about the pink smears issue but I'm not sure if that would be a problem of the sensor itself. Then again having intermittent connections can cause all sorts of unpredictable problems. Maybe just one of the data pins is not great and throws off something while booting. Who knows! If turning it off and back on seems to help I'd better not risk taking the whole thing apart just yet. My camera was completely dead so I had nothing to loose :)

    Awesome video, I wonder if anyone else has the same conclusion. I know that none even blackmagic’s offical repairers know the exact cause of the issue. It would explain why heat cycles make it worse and how it can happen to a camera that has been off for months if not years as well as how reflowing the sensor can sometimes fix the issue. Does anyone know if the sensor design on the g2 is different?

    • @chDiago
      @chDiago 4 года назад

      I apologise for your unsatisfactory watching experience, there is an easy solution to that though. If you check your computer screen, right bottom corner you will see a bar with little icons in it. One of them conveniently looks like a little speaker icon. If you click that, you can push up a little slider that will increase the volume for you! Technology, right? There could also be other factors that affect the sound path, like unfavorable acoustics in your room. Any obstructions in your ear canal also can interfere with sound, especially debris or wax in the external ear canal that can accumulate all the way back to the mastoid bone and around the eardrum. Keeping that clean will really improve your quality of life and general health. Just please do not use q tips as those do more harm than good! Damaging your ear drum by pushing dirt against it can be a really bad and also painful thing. I hope that helps and have a great day!
